图书简介
Bariatric surgery has been shown to be the most cost effective and durable treatment for morbid obesity. It has also been shown to induce long term remission of a variety of obesity-related comorbid conditions. As such, there has been a gradual increase in demand for patients with morbid obesity to undergo bariatric surgical procedure worldwide. In a questionnaire sent out to all members of bariatric societies belonging to the International Federation for the surgery of obesity and metabolic diseases (IFSO) evaluating the number and the type of bariatric procedure performed in 2013, estimated that the total number of bariatric procedures performed worldwide was approximately 470,000. The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric surgery have reported that the number of bariatric surgery procedures in the US in 2015 was 196,000 and this number is increasing year on year. Guidelines for a variety of comorbid long term diseases have also gradually incorporated bariatric surgery as a potential treatment pathway for patient who suffers from morbid obesity. The UK National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) for example have stated that bariatric surgery should be offered to patients with a BMI of 35-40kg/m2 who have obesity related conditions like Diabetes mellitus or obstructive sleep apnoea, or in those with a BMI of >40kg/m2 or greater regardless of weight related comorbidities. Despite this, there is limited knowledge among non-specialist healthcare professionals on the pre-, peri- and post-operative requirement, care and management of patients who are due to have, or have had bariatric surgery.
